Thrive Africa Vegan School Lunch Month

Champion plant-based eating by encouraging affordable, nutritious, compassionate vegan lunch menus in schools across Africa.

The inaugural Thrive Africa Vegan School Lunch Joint Campaign took place in November 2023 in 16 African countries through coordinated efforts of multiple organizations, reaching thousands of students, and replacing thousands of animal-based and factory farmed meals with nutritious plant-based, locally-grown alternatives!

The Thrive Africa Vegan School Lunch Joint Campaign encourages schools to replace animal-based dishes with healthy, plant-based dishes & shares fun humane education to teach kids healthy eating habits and kindness toward animals and the planet.

BENEFITS OF VEGAN SCHOOL LUNCHES

Improved Health

A well-balanced vegan diet provides all the necessary nutrients for growing children, including essential vitamins, minerals, protein, and healthy fats. Vegan meals are often rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, which  contribute to better digestion, increased energy levels, and a reduced risk of certain chronic diseases like heart disease, obesity, and Type 2 Diabetes.

Ethical Treatment of Animals

By adopting a vegan school lunch program, educational institutions can align with values of compassion and respect for animals. This fosters a sense of empathy and encourages students to think critically about the impact of their food choices on animals.

Environmental Conservation

Animal agriculture is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water pollution. By promoting vegan school lunches, educational institutions can reduce their carbon footprint and teach students about the environmental benefits of plant-based eating.

Food Diversity and Exploration

Vegan school lunches introduce students to a wide variety of plant-based foods and cuisines from different cultures. This can expand their taste preferences, encourage curiosity about new foods, and promote culinary creativity.

Inclusive Allergy-Friendly Options

Vegan meals can accommodate various dietary restrictions, making them suitable for students with allergies to animal products.

Humane Education

Exploring vegan diets gives students an  opportunity to learn about the impact of food choices on all living beings, as well as the environment, and the role of food systems in society. This encourages critical thinking and empowers students to make informed decisions about their diets.

Cost-Friendly

Plant-based foods, such as grains, legumes, and seasonal produce, can often be more affordable than animal-based products. Embracing a vegan lunch program leads to cost savings for schools, allowing them to allocate resources to other important educational initiatives!
